Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the correlation among visual-verbal skills, binocular vision and School achievement.

Methods: This study evaluated visual-verbal skills with Korean Reading Rate(KRR) and Developmental Eye Movement(DEM) test, and binocular vision with refractive error, phoria, accommodative facility, fusional vergence and near point of accommodation(NPA) for 122 children of 4th elementary student in Daejeon city. Then, annual school achievement classified into high ? middle ? low 3 groups(38 children each) by class order to compare with each result.

Results: Compared each class order group with visual-verbal skills, KRR test of high group was 10 second shorter than that of low group(p = 0.000), which was statistically significant correlation between school achievement and KRR test result(r = -0.359, p = 0.000). In DEM test, high group was 9 second shorter than low group(p = 0.000), which was also significant correlation between school achievement and DEM(r = -0.427, p = 0.000). In the binocular vision tests, refractive error of middle group was 0.5D higher than that of low group(p = 0.016). Phorias and monocular accommodation test(monocular accommodative facility and monocular near NPA) results were not significantly different among 3 groups. In distance fusional vergence tests, both negative fusional vergence(NFV) and positive fusional vergence(PFV) tests of middle group were shortest among groups(p = 0.011 and p = 0.007). In near tests, NFV was not significantly different but PFV of high group is larger than that of low group(p = 0.000). Especially, statistically significant correlation between school achievement and near PFV was remarkable(r = 0.571, p = 0.000). As the complex ability of accommodation and convergence(binocular accommodative facility and binocular NPA) was compared with each group, binocular accommodative facility of middle group was best among them(p = 0.000) and NPA of high group was shortest(p = 0.037).
Correlation between KRR and DEM test was also statistically significant(r = 0.618, p = 0.000).

Conslusions: Correlation between school achievement and visual-verbal skills(KRR and DEM test) were statistically significant, and only near PFV was significant among binocular vision tests, which showed that near PFV was the larger, school achievement was the higher.
